The project was a sequel to Anton & Irene's earlier interactive documentary, One Shared House, in which designer Irene Pereyra told the story of growing up in Kollontai, a communal house in 1980s Amsterdam run by eight women as an experiment in shared living, feminism, and collective childcare. That documentary's reception led SPACE10 to propose a new project applying its questions to the future rather than the past: a survey structured as an application form for an imagined co-living space opening in 2030, asking people what they would and wouldn't be willing to share with strangers — kitchens, workspaces, smart devices, childcare, self-driving cars — alongside their preferences around who they'd want to live with, ownership, privacy, and the division of chores. The survey drew more than 14,000 responses from 180 countries, and its findings — among them that most respondents wanted tight-knit communities of four to ten people, smaller than most co-living developments were being built for, and that cleanliness, honesty, and consideration mattered more in a housemate than shared background — were released as open, anonymous data, later drawn on by architects and developers designing co-living spaces of their own.
The studio founder took part in a research workshop run by Anton & Irene at SPACE10 in 2018, contributing to the project's research phase alongside its other participants. The questions One Shared House 2030 was asking — what people are actually willing to share with strangers, and what kind of home they imagine living in — sit close to Platlands, an earlier project of her own from 2015 that surveyed visitors about their living environment and invited them to draw their dream house in response, individually or building on a drawing left by someone else.
